Collingwood Little Athletics star Bentley is smiling and back running again after recovering from an intense episode of heel pain.
Active young girls and boys between the ages of 8-15 are prone to experiencing heel pain. The pain can be quite severe and stop them from participating in the sport they love.
We think that this type of heel pain develops as a result of the growth plate at the back of the heel becoming irritated. This may be caused by calf tightness which may develop as a result of the bones in the lower leg growing faster than the muscles and tendons. The impact associated with the heel contacting the ground when moving may also contribute to the irritation.
In Bentley’s case, after modifying his activity level, implementing a stretching program and putting some supportive insoles in his running shoes, he was able to continue running. Bentley was back to performing at his physical best with no pain within five weeks.
